When is IVF Recommended?
IVF may be recommended when other treatments, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), have not been successful or immediately as a first step in treatment. This is often the case with severe male-factor infertility or severe female-factor infertility, such as advanced endometriosis, tubal obstruction, advanced age, or poor ovarian reserve.

The IVF Process
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure where a woman’s eggs are fertilized by sperm in a laboratory setting. IVF is the most advanced ART procedure available today, providing a highly effective, safe form of fertility treatment that has evolved over the past 25 years.
Each cycle of IVF involves multiple steps over a four to six-week period. Here is an overview of the IVF process, beginning in the month preceding the actual IVF treatment cycle:
- Medications to Grow Multiple Eggs: This step typically lasts 9-11 days.
- Egg Retrieval: Eggs are collected from the ovary or ovaries.
- Insemination of Eggs: Eggs are fertilized with sperm, either conventionally or using Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
- Embryo Culture: Fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured for 5-7 days
- Support of Uterine Lining: Hormones are used to support the uterine lining and sustain pregnancy.
- Embryo Transfer: One or more embryos are placed into the uterus.

- Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): Improves fertilization rates.
- Assisted Hatching: Increases the chance of embryo attachment (implantation).
- Embryo Cryopreservation: Allows for the future use of quality embryos.

IVF & ICSI
ICSI is a technique that injects a single sperm directly into an egg, optimizing fertilization, particularly for male factor infertility. It can be performed with freshly ejaculated or frozen sperm. Even men with very low sperm counts can have children using this procedure if the sperm is surgically harvested directly from the testes or vas deferens.
Though ICSI is not necessary for all IVF cases, it is often recommended to improve fertilization rates, especially when egg yield is compromised. The decision to perform ICSI will be made as part of an informed process between you and Dr. Foyouzi. Note that ICSI does not increase the risk of birth defects compared to conventional IVF.
IVF Success Rates
Dr. Foyouzi and the SCFC team ensure all assisted reproductive resources are available to treat patients effectively. Following ASRM and SART guidelines, they provide a balanced and transparent assessment of prognosis with various options and alternatives. Success rates are influenced by factors such as the woman’s age, the number of embryos transferred, and the quality of the embryos, which depend on the genetic integrity of the egg and sperm.
